Contradictions

I was meaning to make this list for a while.

-Those darned climate scientists have deliberately fudged the surface temperature records so that they support manmade global warming!
-The early 20th century warming in the surface records disproves manmade global warming!

-Computers can be made to say anything! Those darned climate scientists have written the climate models so that the output supports manmade global warming!
-The climate models disprove manmade global warming because the output shows a hotspot that doesn't exist!

-The early 20th century warming in the surface records disproves manmade global warming!
-We can't believe the surface records. They are far too inaccurate!

-The ice core co2 records show co2 lags temperature, not the otherway round!
-The ice core co2 records are inaccurate due to co2 diffusing through the ice so we can't believe them!

-Low Climate Sensitivity!
-The Climate has changed a lot in the past!

-Mankind's resourcefulness and ingenuity will allow us to easily adapt to any change in climate or sea level
-A carbon tax will have a catastrophic effect on our economy and civilization

  1. -Mankind's resourcefulness and ingenuity will allow us to easily adapt to any change in climate or sea level.

-A carbon tax will have a catastrophic effect on our economy and civilization.

-CO2 is the gas of life and we should welcome the fact that it is increasing.

    -CO2 concentrations are not increasing.

  2. Good stuff, though sadly, they don't even realise that some of those are contradictions. Especially the last one.

You are just the person to fill a need: there are about 1200 stations that report on a regular basis, and I don't know of a recent map that shows their locations. The JMA page comes close, but it includes a handful of stations not in the GHCN.

Could you kindly make this map? It'd be based on which stations have values in v2.mean for the most recent month (about 1200), and perhaps those with a value within the last year (some more). A visual supplement to this analysis:

Anything in the qc file gets missed, but that's not a big deal.

Only if you want, of course. But it would be helpful.

  3. I have put a post up with maps for those queries. I notice the GHCN raw file seems to update every day (?) and so far about 300 stations have already reported February.

It would be interesting to download the GHCN raw file each day for a few months to see if there is a pattern to which stations report first. Can't see any use in it, but it would be interesting. Looks like the Russian stations have got through very quick.

Andrew I added your first contradiction to the list. Not sure about the second as not enough skeptics claim co2 isn't rising.

  4. Blob

I saw a website where somebody was collecting such contradictions, they got up to about 50, IIRC, but I've lost the link, alas.

There were a few contradictions submitted on comments to this RealClimate thread: #8,21,35.43

Yes, you are right, not many still claim that CO2 is not increasing, but there are a few nuts out there who are eager to helpfully point out that Mauna Loa is a volcano, you know.

  5. wow, you're amazingly helpful. thanks.

It does not update every day; there just happened to be an update today. First once since feb 15, I think.

  7. Thanks for the list. My favorite is an appeal to "common sense" that I often hear:

    - I just don't think that us little humans can influence a huge system like the earth's climate! That's hubris!

    Coupled with:

    - Anyway, if it does turn out to be a problem, we can solve it by geo-engineering!

In Sweden, we recently had one of our mosts notorious deniers (a professor in physical chemistry) on national TV saying that he's pretty sure it's actually going to get colder now, and that he'd be willing to bet some money on it. When one person called him on the bet, he declined because "there is no reliable way to measure global temperatures"... :)

  8. It would be a disaster to try to prevent AGW, it would destroy the free market.
If there is warming, a free market will be able to meet any challenges.
